Etiological Implications of Studies of Identical Twins Discordant for Schizophrenia

چکیده
I should like to share with you our experiences in studying identical twins discordant for schizophrenia, for I believe that these investigations have taught us a number of lessons about the problems inherent in research on schizophrenia. I also feel fairly confident that they have brought us closer to the long-hoped-for day when some answers to the schizophrenia conundrum will be forthcoming. But despite this guarded optimism, I want most to stress in my remarks here the need for conservatism in interpreting data. We, as investigators, must always be aware of the sometimes damaging effects of our own enthusiasm, which can lead us to report results prematurely. Unfortunately, there are many potentially confounding variables which must be accounted for before meaningfulness — not just statistical significance—can be attributed to data derived from the study of schizophrenia. Although those of us involved in the twin studies to be reviewed here are relatively "conservative" investigators, we have nonetheless reported findings which have been either over-interpreted or misinterpreted—usually because we failed to provide the definitive data which might have allowed us to draw firm, rather than tentative, conclusions.

Genetic liability to schizophrenia measured by p300 in concordant and discordant monozygotic twins.
BACKGROUND Differential effects of genes and environment can contribute to etiological heterogeneity in schizophrenia. Twins concordant and discordant for schizophrenia may differ in genetic predisposition to schizophrenia with concordant twins having a higher genetic liability and discordant twins having a lower genetic liability to schizophrenia. We aimed to investigate whether P300 amplitude...

While twin concordances for schizophrenia have been used to estimate heritability and to develop genetic models, concordances in subtypes of monozygotic (MZ) twins can also be used to investigate the influence of prenatal development in the etiology of mental illness. We used within-pair variability and mirroring of fingerprints to estimate retrospectively the placentation status of concordant ...

Margit Fischer reported in 1971 that the risk of schizophrenia in the offspring of her Danish schizophrenic monozygotic twins and their normal cotwins was equal and not different from the risks in the children of schizophrenics in the literature. All of her identical and fraternal twins who had children and all of their offspring have been followed up through the Danish National Psychiatric Reg...
متن کاملLanguage lateralisation in schizophrenia
Dr Sommer and colleagues (2004) reported decreased language lateralisation measured with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in 12 monozygotic twin pairs discordant for schizophrenia compared with 12 healthy monozygotic twin pairs. The authors did not find significant differences in language lateralisation between affected twins and their co-twins without schizophrenia. In the December...

Being an identical twin does not necessarily mean having identical perceptions of family functioning, nor of the twin relationship. Using the co-twin control design, the aim of this study was to explore perceptions of family dynamics and the twin relationship in monozygotic (MZ) twins discordant and concordant for Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD). It was hypothesized that, as has been ...
